oh and btw:
i see it really not as justified to view self interest as a somehow opposing force to empathy.
it merely broadens the sense of self to a level that is obviously evolutionary sufficient.
i could even imagine that something similar to empathy holds our brain/s together to avoid split personalities to a certain point.
but this is just a personal and relatively uneducated hypothesis of course..
may the broadening of our self be less influenced by our collective halluci-nations.
